With winter well and truly here now, and with most of us succumbing to the inevitable switching on of the heating, winter clothes have now started to come out in force. But rather than lamenting the loss of our summer attire from our day-to-day rotation, we like to look upon winter as a chance to dig out our stylish favourites that never go out of fashion, and seize the chance to try out new looks and trends of the season too.
It might sound obvious but scarves are a major fashion hit every winter. There are many different styles to try though so there is no excuse for getting bored with the look. Not only that, but there are various patterns and colours on offer to suit every outfit and occasion, and if that still isn’t enough, there are even multiple ways to tie a scarf.
A square scarf can be folded into a triangle and wrapped around the neck for a more lightweight look that is still cosy enough for winter days, forming a style that is quite casual and rakish when paired with a leather jacket and dark indigo jeans. Whereas a long woollen scarf in a striped pattern is perfect for keeping out even the most ill of winter chills and looks fantastic when paired with a smart look or with a blazer and chinos.
Once again, you might think we are stating the obvious (and to an extent - we are), but gloves are often a neglected afterthought of an item that sits at the back of our wardrobe year-after-year until we need them. Honestly, how many of us don the same old woolly pair that we’ve had for far too many years to count? Maybe it is time to consider an upgrade.
A pair of leather gloves look chic at all times and is perfect for the gent that hates the disabling power of a pair of slippery woollen or fleece gloves. These are gloves with grip and attitude – no more fumbling about trying to grab your keys and eventually giving in to pull a glove off with your teeth and expose one poor chosen mitt to the arctic air – not with a pair of leather gloves on hand.
Or for the gent that laughs in the face of winter restrictions to continue getting out in the fresh air for a morning walk, a pair of sheepskin gloves is a luxurious and extremely toasty addition to his attire. With a classic look that isn’t likely to go out of fashion anytime soon, these sorts of gloves can be splurged on to get the best quality, which is always obvious in both the look and feel.
For most of us, it is an inevitability that at some point in the cold months ahead, we will succumb to the dreaded man-flu. Whether you find this illness to be completely debilitating or something that simply has to be managed is irrelevant, there is nothing sadder to look at than a strong man reduced to a dribbling mess while dabbing at his face with a square of rapidly disintegrating tissue. A handkerchief may not get rid of the virus, but it is a better look than the tissue, and kinder on the nose too.
However, handkerchiefs are not simply of use when sick. The celebrities on the red carpets and models on the runway have been showing us that pocket squares are back. Nothing adds character to a jacket quite like a pocket square, and there are various ways to fold them to get the look that is perfectly suited to your own individual nature.
We hope that we have given you some ideas to get through winter with style and grace, transforming these trends that we should all know about into something new and versatile for 2014.
